Esmeralda Resort attractions -not only sun & beach
Saint-Martin, the Island with 36 pure white sandy beaches, offers a full array of activities such as deep sea fishing, scuba diving, luxurious boutiques for duty-free shopping, quaint creole marketplaces and night life with a lot of restaurants, nightclubs and casinos from which to choose. The French side's Carnival is a pre-Lenten bash of costume parades, music competitions, and feasts. Carnival takes place after Easter on the Dutch side -- last two weeks of April -- with a parade and music competition. On the French side, parades, ceremonies, and celebrations commemorate Bastille Day on July 14 and there is more revelry later in the month on Grand Case Day. The Dutch side hosts the Heineken Regatta in early March, with as many as 300 sailboats competing from around the world. (For the experience of a lifetime, you can sometimes purchase a working berth aboard a regatta vessel.) Marigot (French capital) is 3.2 km (2 miles). Grand Case village (dining center) is 9.7 km (6 miles). Paradise Peak (1,500 feet) is 11.2 km (7 miles). Philipsburg (Dutch capital) is 14.5 km (9 miles). Butterfly Farm is 16 km (10 miles). Subtitled "In the Trail of the Arawaks," Musée de Saint-Martin details island history and culture going back 2,500 years through the colonial era. The ground floor features rotating arts and crafts exhibits. The second floor is a treasure trove of maps, prints, daguerreotypes, and newspapers spanning the 18th to early 20th centuries. Ask the clerks about guided tours of the island focusing on its cultural heritage, including visiting archaeological digs (some closed to the general public), as well as discussing natural phenomena, such as the island's volcanic origins. The Old House (aka Musée du Rhum) - a restored 18th-century green-and-black sugar plantation greathouse, the Old House's interior, including living room and bedroom, carefully replicates the life of a typical planter: period furniture and original family portraits and personal objects preserved for six generations. The museum's complementary second half retraces the history of rum, from the first voyages of Columbus, through the buccaneer days and the rise of the sugar plantocracy, up to the effect of Prohibition. The old posters and print ads are especially delightful, and more sober exhibits cover other French West Indies calamities, from the eruption of Martinique's Mont Pelée to the eruption of world war. |
